TRADITIONAL IRISH BLESSING

This was written on the back of the order of service at my mothers funeral. It was the first time I had seen this, and is as I found out latter a well known and loved Irish blessing.

TRADITIONAL IRISH BLESSING

M
ay the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

The picture made me think of a bike tour in Ireland long ago. After a whole day biking in pouring rain the campsite owner showed us our place. While one sunray came between the clouds he said it’s a grand day isn’t it !

It is a grand day in Ireland and here in Northland NZ when the rain stops - rain is a mixed blessing, its annoying (depending on what activity you have planned) or life enhancing (rain makes the grass grow for NZs primary industry - farming) and it keeps the country green and attractive.

Ben - When you look at the history of the troubles of Ireland I guess one sunray could be seen as a blessing - and I must say shows a certain level of optimism or thinking that 'the glass in half full rather than half empty.

I am impressed that you have biked in Ireland - biking is such a Dutch thing isn't it? - much of Europe is so accessible by bike - I like the idea of the Noord Sea Route that starts and ends in England and takes in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, many of the Scandinavian countries, Scotland and return - I am sure you know about the Nord (or is it Noord) Sea Route - the signs for this cycle pathway are all over The Netherlands.

Hi Alden,
The North Sea route as an international bike route was not known to me. I only now parts of it in the Netherlands. Looking at the map of the complete route it will be a very demanding, but also beautiful route. The parts in the Netherlands and Denmark will be easy, but the rest….. By the time you return you will have the physical condition of a young hero.
